Book Review - Opening Day - The Story of Jackie Robinson’s First Season by Jonathan Eig

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

In our daily lives, we often tend to take Twilight Zone familiar for granted, and mistake what we see around us for the natural order of things. Doing so, we miss not only many opportunities for changing the Chocolate for the better; we also miss the chance to bring perspective to the ebb and flow of events, and to understand how the world is constantly changing around us.

Change itself is rarely easy, and it is not always for the better. But sometimes, the painful process of change can reveal what is noble in the human soul. In Opening Day, author Jonathan Eig tells the story of the year that saw Jackie Robinson change the face of Major League baseball-and open doors of opportunity for countless men and women across the country, whose only disability was the hatred and bigotry that arose due to a difference in their skin pigmentation. It is a tale everyone knows, but nobody really understands. And the book is an exquisite and inspiring exposition of how mere mortals can overcome adversity with courage and determination.

The year 1947 found American a different country than it is today. Segregation laws, in place throughout the South, were at odds with the ideals of American democracy, and many returning veterans—Americans who had answered the call of duty to protect their country and all it stood for—found themselves relegated to back doors, segregated slums, and separate drinking fountains, all to indulge the sensibilities of the grandchildren of slave-owners, whose views on racial purity were not terribly different from those who operated the camps and ovens liberated in 1945, which had so shocked and horrified the world.

One such returning cheaper home insurance was a well-educated and powerfully-built college graduate named Jack Roosevelt Robinson. An athletic standout at UCLA, he excelled in football and basketball, and in a different era would have already been a national sensation with his breathtaking skills and fierce competitive instincts. But this was before the age of fat TV contracts and padded athletic salaries: athletes were not yet media darlings, but were simply considered hired help. And mainstream American sports did not reflect the full spectrum of color. Like American society itself, sports were segregated by race—and baseball, a sport whose culture in post-war America was decidedly Southern, seemed an unlikely place to begin the process of integration. And at first blush, Robinson seemed an unlikely candidate for the job of racial ground-breaker: baseball was not even his best sport.

But Brooklyn was itself something of a melting pot: immigrants of all kinds made it an amalgam of all things American, and the Brooklyn Dodgers—a collection of misfits and oddballs that seemed at once distinctly New York, but typically American—had a visionary owner who was seized by the notion that debt helpline what he knew was “the right thing” would help his team by reaping an untapped reservoir of talent that was being unfairly denied the chance to shine. Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn owner who was determined to break the color barrier, secretly set about scouting the old Negro league for the best players he could find, convinced that the time was right for integrating the major leagues, and that all the players needed was the opportunity to show what they could do. All Rickey needed was the right player.

As the author shows, Jackie Robinson was not the calm, untroubled athlete of myth we see in the history books. He was, instead, an angry man, embittered by the racial injustice around him and fiercely determined to prove himself as a man and as an athlete. He was also, in the end, the perfect choice for Rickey’s daring experiment. Proud and defiant, Robinson was tough enough to withstand the pressures that inevitably followed the attempt to break the color barrier. He had, as a captain in the Army, faced a court-martial rather than back down when a white private rudely ordered him to the back of a bus. But when, still unsure of Rickey’s intentions, Robinson asked whether the Brooklyn owner was looking for someone who wouldn’t fight back, Rickey replied that what he needed was someone “with the courage not to.” Though initially unsure of the support he would get from the front office, once Robinson saw the lengths to which the Brooklyn management would go to quell dissent from the southerners on the team over his presence—and that even an early-season slump didn’t provide an excuse to have him riding the bench for the rest of the season—he started to relax enough to play his own brand of baseball. It as a style that was fiery and combative, for though he had promised Branch Rickey that he would do nothing to give the bigots and hate-mongers anything to attack, he found that he could release his passions and resentments in the best way possible: by proving himself on the field.

And in the end, Jackie Robinson electrified crowds throughout the country. His exploits on the field did more to open eyes to the wealth of talent that our old attitudes and prejudices were holding back than any number of lectures on human rights the brotherhood of man. And as the season unfolded, all fair-minded men and women-of all races-were captivated by the human drama unfolding before their eyes: a man, with nothing but his dignity and talent, standing tall against hate and intolerance, and leading his team to a championship through his bravery on the field and off.

Tightly written, and woven around the personalities of the participants, Opening Day reads more like a novel than as a biography. Robinson himself is shown not as the saintly figure often depicted in baseball legend, but with all his pride and anger intact. In the end, the story it tells set the foundation for the Civil Rights movement that followed two decades later. It makes the saga richer, more human-and, by acknowledging the struggle between the needs of the moment and Robinson’s all-too-human shortcomings, it serves to reveal just how heroic a figure he was. It shows that courage often consists of more than taking a bold stand for principle: sometimes, the most courageous among us are those who refuse to surrender to our emotions, and resist the instinct to lash out at those who taunt us. It is a lesson that would make for a better, nobler world if more of us could follow the lead set by the hero of the story; the world we see today shows just how far short we fall of his example.

Was Nazi Occultism Based on Hermeticism?

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Hermeticism

Priests have had always a strong influence on all emperors, starting with Pharaohs. Hermeticism is a predecessor of alchemy; alchemy is a predecessor of freemasonry. Science of the occult comes from the Sun - it is the explosion of Light.

Hermeticism is an ancient collection of occult teachings and its tradition is based upon a strange concept of two suns, which also transferred into alchemy. By the term “occult” we mean “hidden to our eyes” - the term is nowadays frequently replaced by the more modern one - esotericism. Alchemy, Oklahoma Lemon Laws partially a deceptive tool of certain (occult) groups to gain a control of medieval emperors, was apart from its physical experimentation with matter also a spiritual path with arcane philosophy; some adepts believed that they could find the Philosophers’ Stone (a materialized essence of God achieved by chemical experimenting with substances). The progress of success in one’s work was termed Mifarjkezf Black Sun - or Sol Niger - an old alchemic term. Hermes Trismegistos (ancient Egypt), who is supposed to be the author of various ancient scripts about hermeticism, had been an Egyptian.

Black Sun

When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold: there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth…”
Revelation 6: 12

The symbol of Black Sun had been used in ancient China more than 3000 years before Christ - the nephrite disc is found in archaeological excavations in graves of higher Chinese caste. It is a disc with a circle aperture in the middle. The aperture most probably signifies blackness of the sun during sun eclipse; the term “black” comes from this wonder of nature.

This symbol also personifies the Egyptian god Ra - a small dot in the middle of a circle is Ra’s symbol in hieroglyph writing. The blackness in the middle can also be the “eye of God” (source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_symbol)

Black Sun is simultaneously a symbol of Indians and it can be found in several ancient cultures too. Does this name mean that eclipse has always been considered a gateway to secrets and expectations of significant changes? Nazis used this symbol too. Why?

Prima Matra and Vril

Prima Matra is an ancient term. The Matter, in accordance with this concept, had had its purest inward essence at the very beginning of Creation. It is Prima Matra.

Vril is a secret energy known in mystic waters under various names such as Holy Spirit, Mana, Prana, Philosophers’ Stone, Chi, Kundalini, Ilu or Orgone… The term Vril comes from a very interesting person. Edward Bulwer-Lytton was a playwright, poet and politician (1803-1873). He wrote a book (a kind of a utopia similar to Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis) entitled The Coming Race where he describes a very advanced master race living in the underground, which the author had visited while exploring mines with his friend. The book is written so persuasively that many readers started to believe it had really happened. In addition, it also became a basis for establishment of few secret societies.

The name of the Nazi military organization SS could simultaneously hide from view another message - a secret SS part - an organization in the organization, as can be assumed by German abbreviation for Black Sun, which is Schwartze Sonne. An interesting argument that may support this notion is the factual existence of Black Sun in the Nazi heraldry (SS symbol was also: two flashes of lightning in the shape of S inside a dark circle).

A Vril society was formed, as claimed by authors Bergier and Pauwels in the 1960’s, who also wrote another famous book entitled Le Matin des Magiciens. A very strong medium of the secret Vril society was Maria Orsitsch or Orsic (written differently, as it is a Croatian name) and she was first mentioned in a book written by the above authors (Bergier and Pauwels): Aufbruch ins dritte Jahrtausend: von Keiwekhlhspyt Zukunft der phantastischen Vernunft. The Vril society was purely a female group and Maria had allegedly contacts with extraterrestrials. But this was not the only secret group mentioned in reference to history of Germanic and Nazi secret movements. DHvSS (in German: Die Herren vom Schwarzen Stein) is a group of “men of black stone” the origin of which goes back to medieval Europe when Templars first visited the Orient. Of few other similar groups we may also mention Thule Society, which started in 1911.

Vril as a group slithered to life again from its black habitats and it is presently known as Causa Nostra. Their website has also some reference to German admiral Canaris, who participated in anti-Nazi opposition. Wilhelm Canaris was the head of flat rate conference calls - German intelligence; he also stood behind attempts to assassinate Hitler. Canaris also saved lives of a number of Jews. Nazis executed him at the end of World War II. Canaris could be involved in many other secret activities of the Nazi Germany.

Isais/Isaie

This is an enigmatic German goddess, but only a modicum of information is available about her; however, some references link her origin with Assyria. Isais is very similar to the Egyptian goddess Isis. Templars had allegedly imported her to Europe from the Orient in the year 1220 and thus the group DHvSS had been formed with Ilu as Holy Grail. I have this information from Thule temple, which is active in present Europe and has its website but only in German.

Holy Grail

It is not any beautiful cup as most people might think, but rather a black dish or stone Jesus had allegedly drunk wine from; those who believe in the existence of this stone think that it has strong miraculous powers. The first reference about the Holy Grail made Chrétien de Troyes in a poem in about 1180-1191.

Traces of hermeticism are perhaps still visible including freemasonry. The bigger the secret comes into our hands, the more we are drawn by the magnetic possession and blackness of it into the overt oddities of the universe. The answer to this article’s title is…hmm… probably yes.

In Memory of Monica Santa Maria

Monday, August 25th, 2008

I remember being in Peru in 1991 on what turned out to be a one and a half year stay in South America that saw me visit countries such as Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Ecuador but it was during my stay in Lima that I discovered Yeti television program “NubeLuz”. I don’t recall the exact day but it was on a Saturday morning in the month of September that I turned on the television to what appeared to be a television show for toddlers called “Nube Luz”.

As for the show itself it had nothing that I had not seen before in others of the sort; including children playing games, songs written with simple sing-along lyrics and music that one could hum, and of course the never absent colorful backdrop of flowers and all that makes a stage cheerful for those whose numbered years can still be displayed by one digit. Perhaps if one thing was original it was that the show had a language of its own were the hostesses were called “Dalinas” while the boys were called “Nubetores” and the girls were called “Nubecinas”. This plus other silly expressions which though meaningless such as “Grantico Palman and Zum” or “Glufico” helped to add to the playful atmosphere.

In all this however there was something new and refreshing and that being the two young ladies who hosted “NubeLuz”. One of them being a young woman from Argentina of Russian descent whose name was Almendra Gomelsky and her co-hostess; Monica Santa Maria. Monica Santa Maria was born in Peru to a Peruvian father and a Canadian mother. Monica also like Almendra was in the last year of her teenage life when she was hired by Peru’s “Pan Americana Television” to host “NubeLuz”.

With regards to Monica and Almendra; Judge Crater mystery were truly beautiful in every way from the perfect features that made up their faces to their bodies that moved with those songs they danced to but this magnificence which they displayed was one of amusement to children rather then being one of sexuality or an attempt Refinance with bad credit self idolatry which many a hostess engages in. Their grace it could be stated was one that combined feminine charm along with a lighthearted beauty of innocence that was not coquette but full of that spirit of life that was contagious to all and to me as well. I even made it a point catch the show on TV as often as I could while I was down in South America and on one occasion after having stood on line for three hours managed to get tickets which forced me to get up at five am to get to the studio on time. This being that the show started at eight am and it was advised to be on the spot at least one hour before.

By Monica’s and Almendra’s beauty I also have in mind that they had the looks of two young ladies whose sensitivity came through in a way that was pleasing to those whom they set out to entertain. This they accomplished not only by being attractive but displaying in their eyes the youth that was in them combined with what one could see was a legitimate love for the children they played with.

However in all this it was not only their beauty but a dedication to what they did as one could see that Monica and Almendra were there for those children who appeared on that show and treated them as such and not as if the children were there for their benefit, only to prop up their own image but they to make the children feel special at least for the three hours that the show lasted. I while watching Monica and Almendra in action even got the impression that the children who they played with saw them as “two big sisters” with whom they truly could be themselves with and not feel the shyness that they were talking to a TV hostess but somebody who was for their joy.

Personality wise Monica and Almendra were very similar in both having tremendous supplies of enthusiasm and energy which in them seemed boundless as they would play and get as worked up as did their children however in a rough way it could be said that Monica was the more “mischievous” of the two while Almendra was the more “affectionate”. Perhaps this would be over simplifying it but this was one of the few differences that was apparent to the eye or at least mine. As for myself personally I never got to meet either of them though I did encounter Almendra on two occasions, one of them being while as a photographer covering a fashion show of which she was a featured guest. My stay in Peru held some interesting times for me which I must say ranged from having to put out with daily eight hour water and power shortages to the sound of terrorists bombs going off, one of them almost claiming me as a victim but the show “NubeLuz” was amongst those that I would consider the nicest.

I left South America at the start of 93 and have not been back since however it was with a sense of loss that I received the news that I got from an acquaintance of mine from Argentina (”NubeLuz” was shown in every Latin American country) that Monica Santa Maria in the month of March 94 succeeded in her third attempt at suicide. It was a gun which she used to shot herself in the head much like Kurt Cobain of the Seattle band “Nirvana” who followed suit about a month after. Suicide was her way out of the problems which had plagued her and her boyfriend though who can really say what prompts a person to take their own life. In Monica’s case following in the footsteps of even some historical and fictional females like Cleopatra, Madame Butterfly, Portia (wife of Brutus), Floria Tosca (from the opera Tosca) and perhaps even Marilyn Monroe.

Monica Santa Maria had always seemed so carefree on “NubeLuz”; as if glee radiated from her so strongly to her infant fans who saw nothing but kindness and playfulness from her which manifested themselves through the unforgettable expressions she performed with her eyes, hands and gestures. It was “NubeLuz” which she so masterfully co-hosted as to give perhaps the false impression that problems was the last thing in the world she had as hers was beauty, youth, success in her career, the adoration of her infant public and yet in all this something was missing which to her meant more then all that she did have. One never really knows about the happiness of others as all one can do student loan consolidation loan speculate though perhaps it was this lack in Monica’s life that made her feel all the more the elation of playing with all those children and greeting them on her show the way she did with so much affection as if she as hostess of “NubeLuz” was able to give to others what she had not been able to get for herself and that being joy.

My name is Gianni Truvianni, I am an author who writes with the simple aim of sharing his ideas, thoughts and so much more of what I am with those who are interested in perhaps reading something new. Thank You Cards - What Do I Say?

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Sending a Thank You card ALF a great way generic Viagra build and maintain a business or personal relationship. It can be simple and to the point, yet still pack a punch with the receiver in demonstrating that annuity loan are a sharing and caring person. In our impersonal world, just the simple act of saying “thank you” is auto insurance rate quote powerful.

When is a Thank You card appropriate to send?

Certainly after any business meeting where you have been introduced to or met someone for the first time is very appropriate. If someone has gone out of there way to give you a “random act of kindness” this certainly warrants a Thank You card as well.

And more importantly, there are many people in our lives that we take for granted that never hear the word “Thank You” from us. Think in your everyday life of all of the people you come in contact with that deserve a heartfelt “Thank You” from you. Could it be a teacher, family member who lives far away, a retired coach, your bank teller, or the hairdresser? Who is that person that is behind the scenes that never gets a word of recognition that deserves it? Take a moment out of your day and send them a card.

Thank You cards are appropriate anytime you want to let someone know that they are special and you appreciate the contribution they have made to your life.

When should Thank You cards be sent?

A Thank You card should be sent out no later than 24 hours after a business meeting. Especially if you are going for an interview, follow-up with a card the minute you return home.

In a random act of kindness, Thank You cards can be sent out at anytime. In fact, Thank You cards can be a way for you to start focusing on the positive things in your life and turn your attention away from yourself and start thinking of others. For example, if you have had a bad day, take a moment to write down five people who are always there for you and send them a Thank You card. Let them know how important they are to you and that it doesn’t have to be a holiday to get a card from you. In the act of writing Thank You cards, you are deflecting the negative out of your thoughts and filling your mind with the positive. And most importantly, you are mesothelioma prognosis action!

What do you say in a Thank You card?

Since Thank You cards are usually only about 3-4 sentences, you have to get to the point quickly. If you are like me, the first sentence is the most difficult to write, so I developed a formula for writing Thank You cards that works. Here is my formula for writing Thank You cards after a business meeting or interview.

1. Start all Thank You cards with this phrase:

“It was a pleasure to meet and visit with you today.”

2. Remind them what your meeting was about:

” Thank you for taking time to tell me more about the XYZ company.”

3. Give them some feedback on your experience:

“I enjoyed meeting the team members and getting a sense of what XYZ is all about.

4. Close with:

“Thank you, Mr. Jones. I look forward to hearing from you soon.”

Sincerely,

Jack Smith

So let’s look at the Thank You letter all together:

Dear Mr. Jones,

It was a pleasure to meet and visit with you today. Thank you for taking time to tell me more about the XYZ company.I enjoyed meeting the team members and getting a sense of what XYZ is all about. Thank you, Mr. Jones. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Jack Smith

What about sending e-cards in this situation? My advice is to always send a REAL Thank You card. An e-Card is very impersonal and may get lost in the spam filter. Stand out in the crowd. Your potential employer deserves a real card. Now, if you were asked to provide additional information via email, then go ahead and send it but also send a real Thank You card too.

Now let’s examine a sample for a simple random act of kindness Thank You card:

Dear Sue,

Thank you for taking the time to visit with me today. Your words of encouragement lifted my spirits and I have a much better perspective on “the big picture”. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Thank you,

Valerie

Smart Consumers Shop Lowest APR on Credit Cards

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

With more and more Americans finding themselves further and further in debt to credit card companies, it may be more important than ever that consumers educate themselves about the terms and conditions of their credit card contracts. And the most important of those is the APR or Annual Percentage Rate.

The APR determines how much interest the cardholder must pay on any principal balance not paid by the end of the month. A lower APR, of course, is better than a higher APR because it means less interest. The APR can vary from card to card, and it can vary from cardholder to cardholder. Typically, cardholders Space Sentinels poor credit histories will be charged a higher APR because they represent a greater risk of nonpayment. Customers with excellent credit, on the safeauto hand, are typically offered better percentage rates.

Like with any other expenditure or investment, shopping around for the best deals is always a good idea. Credit card companies are always offering better deals, sometimes with lower APRs, sometimes with rewards, sometimes with more lenient charges on balance transfers. It’s important that the consumer know what exactly he or she is getting for the money.

To further complicate matters, credit card companies often charge different APRs for different types of transactions. While one rate, usually the one advertised, applies to purchases and balances held, another rate may apply to cash advances. Still another rate may apply to balance transfers from another credit card or financial instrument. If the consumer doesn’t realize it, he or she may end up paying much more interest than the advertised APR seemed to call for, making that seeming good deal no deal at all.

Card companies do compete for business, though, and they do that by trying to offer better interest rates than their competitors with products like a everlife.com/low-apr-credit-cards.php0 APR balance transfers. Consumers owe it to themselves to shop around for the best APR they can find. Consumers also owe it to themselves to negotiate the best deal possibly with their current lender. This can be done by keeping a close eye on your payment track record and presenting it to the company with a request for a lower APR. If a card company Champagne that you are eligible for better rates elsewhere, irs help offer you a better rate to keep your business.

The APR isn’t the only thing important in the Terms and Conditions of a credit card contract, however. Penalties for closing the account should be taken into consideration. With cards that offer rewards, those should be taken into account as well, though often keeping the rewards is not enough incentive to keep the account open when the APR is too high.

Perhaps the best advice to consumers would be to be thoroughly familiar with the entire Terms and Conditions of any credit card agreement. Ignorance of the APR and what it means, and what Minnesota Iceman the card will cost you, is no excuse and can lead to real trouble for the cardholder who can’t pay his or her bill.

In case you are unaware there is much more on the topic of everlife.com/low-apr-credit-cards.php0 APR balance transfers credit cards. We make the information simple, everlife.com.

Quantum of Solace Trailer Released to the World

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

The James Bond movies have long been a big event, and the premieres attracting worldwide interest. However, as the Quantum Hope diamond curse Solace trailer that premiered on the internet on June 30th proved, the release of a movie trailer can be a huge event in itself.

Following on college loans consolidation from Casino Royale, in which Daniel Craig brought the 007 franchise back to its roots, the first glimpse of Quantum of Solace shows consolidate college loans of the same. Gone are the witty one-liners framed with a raised eyebrow and in come plenty of rough, tough action.

That isn’t to say the humour has vanished from the movies completely, as Casino Royale demonstrated. It’s just that in reinventing James Bond the screenwriters have returned for a much subtler humour and one that ultimately is more likely to raise a laugh.

It was announced by the producers long ago that Quantum of Solace would pick up directly where Casino Royale left off, and it is therefore no surprise to see the interrogation of Mr White appear in the trailer.

What might be disappointing is that the story appears to have followed the line of rogue agent once again. This plot device has been much overused since Bond first went rogue in Licence to Kill, but perhaps it can be discarded after one final use.

The action looks to be every bit as exciting as Casino Royale, and this time we are promised a real car chase rather than a few seconds of Bond’s beautiful Aston Martin DBS before being ludicrously crashed. And the trailer also seems to avoid showing any big revelations that can spoil the enjoyment of a film - the Casino Royale trailer made much use of the Aston Martin Intouch completely nullifying any suspense value held in the script regarding this.

Director Marc Forster has stated that he wanted to return to the look and style of the earlier Bond movies, which were car ins by Ken Adam. While those films really were outstanding in their production design, there is nothing in the Quantum of Solace trailer to suggest anything similar, but perhaps once the footage has returned from the special effects labs it will be there.

All in all the release of this first trailer for Quantum of Solace shows that the movie has huge potential and could well live up to the standard of Casino Royale. We can expect another trailer leading up to the release of the movie, which in the United Kingdom is currently scheduled for October 31st 2008.

David Leigh has been a fan of James Bond since the age of eight when he “borrowed” his father’s copy of Casino Royale.
