Interview with DISLOCATION (English version)
In interview attended Oskars (now on here „O”) – guitarist & Renats (now on here „R”) – drums
BMD: Why exactly „Dislocation”?
R: It has nothing to do with dislocations. The foundation of band was laid by me and bass player. All rehearsals were done in his house, and when he left we had to move out from that place. So name is connected with this place – location and leaving this place.
BMD:Who is backbone of band?
R: Basically, it`s me, but album gets its shape from bits`n`pieces. Everybody had its mark on creation of record.
BMD: Why exactly oriental motives?
R: If I wasn`t in band, than it wouldn`t play in such manner. Actually there are plenty of bands who use oriental motives but they aren`t called oriental. This is my background, I`m lezgin. And I put out what I heard from childhood. It comes out naturally. Eastern music has different taste, different value. From point of view of style, I don`t want to put a stamp on our music. We didn`t invented style oriental. I could only add progressive or fusion. All others – avant-garde, experimental, oriental aren`t invented by us, maybe we sound just like that. Just from me – fusion or progressive.
O: Baltic music doesn`t have depth like eastern music. You can`t call it music at all.
BMD: Is there a special attitude to you?
R: What really gets into ears is these elements of eastern music. No one had played in Latvia brutal death metal and suddenly starts break and lullaby. That attracts attention. People don`t get our message in whole…
O: but there isn`t discrimination. One wrote that he likes our music exactly because no one had done such before.
R: It is natural to respond negatively towards something different. It doesn`t bother me. It is a tendency – there are many bands in the world that play fusion, but not all can incorporate styles, it looks unnaturally. You have to know how to mix styles in music.
BMD: Are you influenced by other bands that use in their music eastern motives?
R: Most look alike could be Opeth, Amaseffer, something from Cynic. It`s hard to say, there are plenty of bands, who do look alike, but no one is like us. In sense of influence – I have from childhood base of ethnical music. At the same I listened oldschool pop and it was sufficient foundation, which I value too. Then I turned to metalscene, it is a blend…I didn`t want to play just technical meat.
BMD: Is it important for you to deliver part of your culture or just to show off?
R: I don`t do it to advertise East or to praise myself. It is important for me to share with my luggage.
BMD: Is it good that in West are such bands that use in their music eastern motives?
R: I doubt that in music are some cultural differences. It is 2011 – globalization. Your roots don`t determine what will come out of you or what you will like.
BMD: So, it means that such bands as your are good example for globalization…
O: There is natural and negative globalization, where cultures are so mixed up that people don`t have background anymore, they don`t know who they are and where they come from. Metal music is natural globalization. It is rich culture with many cultures and their backgrounds in it.
BMD: Is your material “one man project” or is it the result of common efforts?
R: Basically, “Sagul” was written by me, except bits`n`pieces. Actually, I was drummer in the band, but due to no one could write good songs, I took this process on my own. So, I have big experience in songwriting…I had material gathered and I released it. Almost like Burzum. But if guys don`t like it, they won`t play it, they are personalities and I try to write for them egocentric parts. I`m glad, that they like to do it.
BMD: What were promotional actions in support of newcomer “Sagul”?
R: We had radio interview, presented album in acoustic version in music shop “Randoms” , where you can find it. You can get record directly from the band too, write to dislocation@inbox.lv. We opened Latvian Metal awards ceremony, but main gig will be in Nabaklab on 26th March (more about it – Day/Night – BMD zine).
O: We are active in myspace too (myspace.com/banddislocation) Gig in “Randoms” will be posted on youtube.
BMD: Do you have something there now too?
R: Old record in old version and some live recordings. Try to find through Dislocation metal Latvia.
O:…or band.
BMD: Do you go abroad?
R: In overall, we started to do everything just now. We had only gig in Vilnius` “Mulen Ružas”, but we hadn`t tours yet, we are small band. We have more work to do, but we can`t do it in Latvia. We don`t have opportunities to develop as concert band, because here isn`t any demand.
BMD: What do Lithuanians think about your music?
R: It`s totally different level – they treat you like a human…they give huge feedback.
BMD: What about future plans?
R: Time will show…I have some material. It`s better to produce good music, rather trying to be popular.
BMD: Do you have any sentiments to fans?
O: Do right things in right moment, driven by right motives.
